FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

PARAMEDICAL & COSMETIC TATTOO |  SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS

TOP 2 MOST ASKED QUESTIONS

1.

IS SCALP MICROPIGMENATION THE SAME AS A TATTOO?

Not exactly.  SMP is sometimes referred to as 'hair tattoo" because of the way that the ink is applied. However, the techniques, tools mechanisms and expertise involved are significantly different than those required for tattooing.  It's in its own category, as it is a blend of body art tattoo, paramedical tattoo, medical pigmentation and permanent make up (PMU) techniques.

2.

WILL THE "HAIR TATTOO" DAMAGE MY EXISTING HAIR GROWTH?

No. There is no danger of damaging follicles or existing or future hair growth. However, it is important to note that SMP does not treat hair loss. Though it can promote hair regeneration, it does not cause follicles to grow back. SMP can make hair appear thicker in thinning hair, and add definition to the hair line, or conceal the appearance of scars on the scalp.

IS SMP SAFE FOR WOMEN & WHAT ARE THE RISKS OF SMP FOR WOMEN?

SMP can be very life changing for many!

It is safe, non-toxic and little to no risk.

  • No Down Time.

  • Uses no chemicals.

  • Requires no incisions.

  • Can typically be finished in 2-3 sessions.

  • Last 2-3 years before needing a touchup.

THE HEALING PROCESS & RESULTS

WHAT IS HEALING LIKE AND HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE?

  • Immediate Aftercare: Expect some redness for a day or two. Follow your practitioner's care instructions closely.

  • Healing Timeline: The scalp typically heals within 5 to 7 days post-session.

  • Final Results: Complete healing and final results are seen about a week after the last session, and you are able to complete additional sessions within 2-4 weeks.

HOW MANY TREATMENTS ARE NEEDED?

This varies from person to person. 2-3 sessions is common, but not always necessary. Your unique goals and needs will determine your plan for optimal results. We lean toward whatever is the most conservative path to achieve the best results, since our goals is  a natural look.

Generally, the 1st session lays the foundation and often appears "too light" to the client; however,  the 2nd session adds the density and any sessions thereafter are generally for fine tuning and evening out.

HOW LONG DOES SMP LAST?

With the right care, including regular application of high SPF sunscreen outdoors, SMP can maintain its appearance for many years. Typically, for clients in good health with a standard immune system, the color should remain vibrant for around 4-6 years, with the possibility of the pigment gradually fading over a period of up to 8 years.

Should a touch-up be necessary, it's offered at a cost that's usually lower than the initial treatment.

WILL MY SMP TREATMENT BE NOTICEABLE TO OTHERS?

The SMP treatment is designed to blend in with real hair follicles, making it nearly impossible for even close friends and family to discern where natural hair ends and the SMP begins.

WILL SMP FADE, SMEAR, OR CHANGE COLOR OVER TIME?

Pigment placed in the skin's dermal layer naturally fades over time, yet SMP is designed to maintain its appearance for several years before any significant fading occurs. Sun exposure can accelerate fading and cause some tattoo pigments to break down, leading to increased fading and potential smearing.

As pigments degrade, their color components may shift. Should this happen, we're ready to provide touch-up sessions or adjust the pigment color with additives to correct, balance, or enhance the tone as needed.

 IS SMP REVERSIBLE?

Yes, scalp micropigmentation can indeed be removed, with laser treatment being the most effective method.

WHAT TO EXPECT AT YOUR APPOINTMENT:

Is SMP Painful? What does it feel like during the procedure?

Photo of studio with tattoo chair and blue furniture

SMP is generally less painful than a traditional tattoo. During the procedure, clients might feel a bit of discomfort, often described as a mild tingling. However, most people are more excited about the results than worried about the sensation. Most people say the pain is between a 2-4, on a scale of 1-10.

HOW LONG IS A TYPICAL SESSION?

Typically 1-5 hours per area. We hope you'll find our studio relaxing and inviting.  We recommend you bring your phone/earbuds to listen to your preferred music, podcast or watch a movie to pass the time. Believe it or not, some people have fallen asleep during a session and that's okay too!

CAN I DRIVE AFTER MY SMP TREATMENT?

Yes, there is no downtime and you can return to normal activities. You may be a little red and sore and will need to follow the after care instructions provided to you.

HOW MUCH DOES HAIR DENSITY SMP COST?

The cost of the procedure ranges from $800 to $4,000, depending on the size and coverage area needed. In some cases, smaller areas requiring minimal coverage may qualify for a reduced rate. During your consultation, you’ll receive a detailed quote for our minimum package, which includes two sessions plus one fine-tuning session.

Touch-up sessions are generally priced lower than the initial sessions due to the reduced amount of work involved.

Please note that a minimum of two sessions is essential, as achieving optimal density is a gradual process. A third or fourth session may be recommended after the second session has fully healed and results are assessed.

PRE & POST CARE

How Should I Prepare for My SMP Session?

To prepare for your session effectively, it's important to follow these steps to ensure the best possible outcome and a smooth experience:

  1. DO NOT use any exfoliating products on the scalp, scratch, or agitate the scalp within 48 hours of your appointment.

  2. No Tanning:

    • Avoid any tanning/tanning oils/excess sunlight that would cause burning or peeling of your skin. Please reschedule if you have sunburn on your scalp.

  3. Wash Scalp:

    • Wash your scalp with gentle shampoo the day before coming to your appointment for a clean surface. (Do not use exfoliators on your scalp!

    • Clients who use a hair piece, do not apply 5-7 days prior to your scheduled procedure.

  4. Hydration:

    • Drink plenty of water in the days leading up to your session. Well-hydrated skin can handle the tattooing process better and aids in healing.

  5. Avoid Certain Substances:

    • Refrain from consuming alcohol, caffeine, and blood-thinning medications (like aspirin) 24-48 hours before your session, as these can increase bleeding and affect pigment absorption.

  6. Skin Care:

    • If you were previously instructed, apply a gentle non-fragrant moisturizer to keep the skin hydrated (ex. Aquaphor).

  7. Comfortable Clothing:

    • Wear comfortable clothing. You may bring a clean hat or scarf to loosely cover your head after the procedure.

  8. Nutrition:

    • Eat a healthy meal before your session to keep your blood sugar stable, which can help in managing discomfort and preventing dizziness.

  9. Mental Preparation:

    • Get a good night's sleep before your appointment and come with a positive mindset, ready for your transformation.

  10. Consultation Notes:

    • Review any specific instructions provided during your consultation, as individual needs may vary.

What Post-Treatment Care is Required? (For 5-7 Days After)

  1. Immediate Care:

    • Keep the treated area clean and dry. Avoid touching the area with unwashed hands to prevent infection.

  2. Cleaning:

    •  Do not wash the pigmented area for 3 days. After 3 days, it is suggested to use a mild, sulfate-free shampoo. If you need a recommendation, please let your artist know.

    • Before bathing, gently apply a light coating of organic moisturizer on the procedure area using a clean cotton swab. Continue this regiment until the procedure area is healed.

  3. Moisturizing:

    • Apply a thin layer of the recommended healing ointment or cream to the treated area as instructed. This helps in keeping the area hydrated and promotes healing.

  4. Avoid Sun Exposure:

    • Keep the treated area out of direct sunlight. If you must go outside, cover the area with a physical barrier like clothing or use a broad-spectrum sunscreen with high SPF after the initial healing period (usually a few days post-treatment).

  5.  DO NOT use products that contain AHA's (anti-aging creams) on the procedure area. (Other examples: Glycolic Acid, Lactic Acid, etc) Always check your labeling.

  6. No Scratching or Picking:

    • Resist the urge to scratch or pick at the treated area. Let any scabs or flaky skin fall off naturally to prevent scarring or loss of pigment.

  7. Avoid Water Activities:

    • Stay away from swimming pools, rivers, lakes, the ocean, hot tubs, saunas, for 30 days.

    • Physical Activity:

      • Limit strenuous exercise for the first 7 days post-treatment to prevent excessive sweating and irritation in the treated area.

  8. Hats & Scarves:

    • You may cover your scalp with a loose cap or scarf, but they must be VERY CLEAN. For best results, leave the scalp uncovered until fully healed.

  9. USE SUNSCREEN -  Use "total sun block" only after the procedure area is healed to prevent pigment color fading.

  10. Follow-Up:

    • Attend any scheduled follow-up appointments and touch-up sessions as recommended to achieve the best results.

  11. Monitor Healing:

Keep an eye on the treated area for any signs of unusual redness, swelling, or discharge. If you notice anything concerning, contact your provider immediately.

Remember, healing times and specific care instructions can vary based on individual factors and the extent of the treatment. Always follow the personalized advice given during the consultation and post-treatment discussions.
